Acne can be a very distressing condition and one that is not necessarily restricted to teenage years; in fact it can affect people of all ages. Acne is caused by the over activity of the sebaceous glands. Normally, these will secrete oily substances (sebum) onto the skin to help protect it, but a sensitivity to testosterone (a naturally occurring blood hormone found in both men and women), can trigger an over production of sebum.
Acne scarring can develop as a complication of acne. Any type of acne spot can lead to scarring and scarring is more common when nodules and cysts are present. It is caused when the body works extremely hard to heal the wounds caused by acne which leads to an excess of collagen build-up in the skin. This collagen can stay in place permanently which causes acne scarring.
